Getting top scores in PTE or IELTS in the 1st attempt itself

Image
Hi Everyone!! I thought of sharing my experience at a high level on how I managed to obtain a so-called ‘superior’ score (79+ each) in the  Pearson Academic Test of English (PTE) . English language tests have been a nightmare and a decider for many visa aspirants who wish to fulfil their dreams of living, studying or working in Australia/NZ.  I was never someone who had participated in a lot of debates during my school and college days, and so I knew that the biggest challenge for me was to do well in the Speaking section. My PTE score (one and only attempt) 90, 90, 81 and 81 out of 90 each in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing sections respectively. My overall score of 86 out of 90 in PTE is equivalent to getting the highest band score of 9 in IELTS. Appeared for the PTE Academic on the 15 th  of March 2017. Why PTE? PTE is getting popular especially among people who intend to migrate to Australia from other countries. Intended migrants are

But if you’re a female wanna-be coach, you've got to find the path on your own.   Only 9 percent of Australia's official coaches were women at the Rio Olympics, down from 12 percent in London.   Why is it that the leadership in women's sport is still a man's world?   If you're a male, there are people that have been there before so there is a path which you can follow.   We just have 11 women coaches out of the 40 head coach roles currently occupied in different categories of sport for females like W-League, NRLW, WNBL, AFLW, Sup

PTE Listening -- HIGHLIGHT CORRECT SUMMARY -- Scoring Technique

PTE Listening -- HIGHLIGHT CORRECT SUMMARY -- Scoring Technique This section would be a cakewalk for those who watch a couple of English movies every now and then. People who are not that comfortable with foreign accents might find this section a bit difficult.  You would be assessed on your ability to listen to a recorded speech and select the most appropriate summary from the available 4 to 5 answer options. You also do a fair bit of reading here, and hence it assesses your reading skills as well. You will have 10 crucial seconds to quickly go through all the answer options and understand the context of the passage. Focus, focus and focus. Try to understand the speaker’s frame of mind.     Eliminating 2 options would not be a difficult task as almost every multiple choice question has 2 irrelevant answer options. Do that as quickly as possible. There would be 2 close options to choose from. But remember that only one of these 2 options would be a complete summa

PTE Listening -- SUMMARIZE SPOKEN TEXT -- Scoring Technique

Good at shorthand, aren’t you? You would be required to listen to an audio clip, anywhere between 60 to 90 seconds, and then convey the same message by writing a few sentences between 50 to 70 words (overall) in 10 minutes. Shorthand, by the way, is a technique of accelerated handwriting used for taking notes of the facts, sometimes the main idea of the speech, to later refer back and present your own form of the story in a concise manner. There will be 2 such questions and a lot of practice is required to get the maximum scores from this section. A fairly big notepad and a pen are the two weapons provided to all test takers. You now know that the war is about to begin :) Even though you have 10 minutes to respond to 1 question, you should start taking notes as soon as the speaker begins. Don’t wait to understand the context initially. Cannot skip taking notes as it would be quite difficult to remember all the points described in the audio lecture. It’s very impo

Improve your SPEAKING skills online

Improve your SPEAKING skills Open the following link using Google Chrome browser :- https://dictation.io/ (free software) You will see a notepad opening up with few buttons on the bottom-left side of the screen. Click on the 'START DICTATION' button and start reading the sentences loudly at a normal pace. It will convert your speech to text and display it right in front of your screen. If the spelling of the speech-converted-text comes out exactly the way it should be, it means you are pronouncing it properly. You then need to learn the punctuation rules so that you can take appropriate pauses while reading or speaking whenever you face a comma, full-stop etc. Prepare a list of words which you feel are not coming out properly, and repeat the above process till the time the software gets those spellings right. You can yourself check your pronunciation and the fluency level, and improvise on your speaking skills with some self-assessment. We conduct

PTE Speaking -- ANSWER SHORT QUESTION -- Scoring Technique

PTE Speaking -- Answer Short Question -- Scoring Technique It is your common sense and your pronunciation which would help you score well in this question type. You would listen 10 to 12 simple questions of 1 mark each one after the other, which are supposed to be answered in a single word or a few words (and not in a sentence literally). The questions will be as simple as: What do we call a picture that a doctor takes to see inside your body? The answer is ‘An X-ray’. Even if you answer by saying just ‘X-ray’, it is okay. Sometimes, you might also get options to choose from, for example: Who takes classes in the school: A teacher or a cricketer?  You could just say ‘Teacher’ or ‘A teacher’ and proceed for the next question. Scoring Technique ·         Keep your answer to the point. Don’t try to answer the question by forming a complete sentence. ·         Listen to the question properly so that you can make the best guess in a case when you are not sure about t

PTE Reading -- RE-ORDER PARAGRAPHS -- Scoring Technique

PTE Reading -- Re-order Paragraphs -- Scoring Technique This section tests your ability to arrange a group of jumbled sentences in a logical order. There will be 4 to 5 text boxes (in a jumbled manner) on the left side of your computer screen, each containing a sentence. You would be required to drag the sentences to the right side of the screen, thereby maintaining a correct order. Scoring Techniques Identify the 1st sentence of the paragraph. It would be complete in itself and it would not need to refer back to any other sentence for any piece of information. Every other sentence would refer back to the previous sentence for completion. If there are 2 sentences which can stand on its own, choose the one which sets the context in a broader way. Try to follow the chronological order of events. Also, make sure that the 5th sentence refers back to the 4th sentence, the 4th refers back to the 3rd sentence and so on.. The ideal time to complete one Re-order paragraph q

PTE Speaking -- READ ALOUD -- Scoring Technique

PTE Speaking -- Read Aloud This is one of the easiest types of questions in the PTE Reading section where you can aim to score full marks just by reading a short passage (of up to 60 words) properly. There would be approx 6 to 7 such questions and you would get ample of time (30-40 seconds) to skim through the entire passage and identify the words where you need to be careful while actually recording your response. Scoring Technique  Use https://dictation.io/ to check if the spelling of the speech-converted-text is correct. This is the best way to improve your pronunciation. Speak clearly at a decent pace so that the computer-algorithm, which records your voice, should be able to distinguish between two consecutive words. The real problem comes when you get a relatively complex word like (revolutionized, Sagittarius, Statistics, Arduous etc.) in between the given passage which is not that commonly used. You need to decide on how 'clear' and ‘loud’ you need to

PTE Listening -- SELECT MISSING WORD -- Scoring Technique

PTE Listening – Select Missing Word This is a relatively easier section which checks whether or not you are good at coming to the conclusion after listening to some short story or a speech. We guess everyone is, so be confident and listen carefully. You will get to hear to a voice-recording for around 30 to 60 seconds (approx). Either a single word or a group of words at the end of the recording would be replaced by a beep sound. You would be required to select the most appropriate option (amongst 3 to 5 available answer options) that goes with the meaning/context of the entire speech. Scoring Technique ·         In order to guess on something (missing words in this case), you first need to know what that ‘something’ is all about. ·         The 1 st sentence of the instructions (as part of the question) itself would make the context clearer. ·         You need to understand the theme of the speech to answer these types of questions (2 to 3 in number). ·

There will be 2 such questions and a lot of practice is required to get the maximum scores out of this section. People who aim to get 65 sometimes skip these 2 questions completely to save time and answer other questions which are certainly easier, but this is not advisable.
