PTE Speaking -- DESCRIBE IMAGE -- Scoring Technique

PTE Speaking -- Describe Image -- Scoring Technique

You will see a diagram/pie-chart/bar-graph/map etc for 25 seconds. The trick is to understand the image and speak selectively about it within 40 seconds.
  • Be selective. You are not supposed to speak all that you see in 40 seconds. Pick a few key things to speak about, and leave out the rest.
  • Speak clearly and at a decent pace. Start with describing the heading/subject in one sentence.
  • It would easily take up 4 to 5 seconds if you just rephrase the title at the top of every question. Include what the x-axis and the y-axis represent if it is a bar graph or a line graph.
  • Highlight 4 to 5 major points from the image which are relevant and clear, one after the other. This should easily take the next 20-22 seconds.
  • At last, conclude your speech within another 5 seconds. Try to finish by the 37th or 38th second and stop before their timer actually stops (exactly 40 seconds).
  • Even if you say something wrong or irrelevant, DO NOT RESTART your sentence in order to correct yourself. Just continue speaking and conclude before the microphone turns off.
  • Usage of difficult words doesn’t fetch extra points. Use simple English in your native accent.
  • Just go on with the flow and DO NOT STOP / PAUSE unexpectedly. Target sentence completion.

If you pause for more than 3 seconds while recording your response, the microphone will automatically turn off and you will be scored on the basis of the incomplete recorded response.

Sample Question

Look at the image which shows the coalfields operated from the Coal Terminals in Australia. Please speak into the microphone and describe the image in your own words. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Sample Response

Subject
(one-liner)
  • The image shows the coalfields operated from the Hay Point Coal Terminal and the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal somewhere in Australia.

Speech body (4 to 5 sentences)

  • These are one of the largest coal export ports in the world. Millions of tonnes of coal reach these coal terminals via different trains.
  • The coal is then processed further before being shipped to other countries.
  • It’s very important that the machines keep running all the time as any downtime of the trains or the ships would result in a loss of huge amounts of money to the companies which own these coal terminals.
  • Australia is a major supplier of high-quality coal to both mature and the emerging markets.
  • Coal benefits all Australians through its contribution to exports, wages, investment and tax revenue.

Conclusion (one-liner)

  • It is Australia’s comparative advantage in coal – together with iron ore – that has helped to sustain the longest period of continuous economic growth in the nation’s history.
