PTE Reading -- MULTIPLE CHOICE, CHOOSE MULTIPLE ANSWERS -- Scoring Technique

PTE Reading - Multiple choice, choose multiple answers

This is possibly the most time-consuming and the most difficult section of the exam where a passage (of 3-5 paragraphs) will appear on your screen. You would be required to read it thoroughly and answer the question by selecting all the correct responses (generally more than 1) out of the 4-5 available ones.

There will be 2 such questions and a lot of practice is required to get the maximum scores out of this section. People who aim to get 65 sometimes skip these 2 questions completely to save time and answer other questions which are certainly easier, but this is not advisable. You cannot afford to skip this section if your desired score is 79+ out of 90.

Scoring Technique

  • Focus, focus and focus. Try to understand the main idea of the passage.
  • You might want to skim the answer option quickly so as to get writer's purpose, feelings on that particular topic and the tone of the passage.
  • Identify the facts, opinions and try to connect the different sentences and paragraphs together.
  • Some of the incorrect answer options will have a few catchy words from the passage just to create some confusion. Read carefully to avoid getting trapped.
  • First, eliminate the options which you think are not that close enough or are irrelevant.
  • Try to find out mistakes in the remaining ones. Refer back to the passage and make sure you do not add to what is mentioned in the passage. This will help you select the correct responses.
  • Do not guess. This section carries negative marking, so choose the options wisely.
  • Coming back to the questions you’ve already attempted/left is not allowed. Do not get stuck to one question and move on to the next one.
  • You should not spend more than 3 minutes ideally to answer a MCQ. You might get relatively easier questions (like Fill in the Blanks etc.) towards the end of the section.
